"If Science was a religion, none will be comparable. Its cures are miraculous, and its curses are fatal. (Thank Science it isn't)"
"I like music in the same way a moth likes to fly into a candle, or a dolphin likes to get entangled in a fishing net."
“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.”

"You can prove anything you want by coldly logical reason - if you pick the proper postulates... Postulates are based on assumption and adhered to by faith. Nothing in the Universe can shake them."

As late as 1770 many religious Americans still felt that, since thunder and lightning were tokens of the divine displeasure, it was impiety to prevent their doing their full work. It took a few decades for the devout to abandon their religious prejudices regarding the use of the lightning rod, but eventually it was demonstrated to all but the most dense that both the "vengeance of God" and the "Prince of the Power of the Air" were forced to retreat before the lightning-rod of a heretic.

"If we look back at the beginning we shall find that ignorance and fear created the gods; that fancy, enthusiasm, or deceit adorned or disfigured them; that weakness worships them; that credulity preserves them; and that custom, respect and tyranny support them, in order to make the blindness of man serve their own interest. If the ignorance of nature gave birth to Gods, the knowledge of nature is calculated to destroy them."
- Baron d'Holbach, Paul-Henri Thiry (1723–1789), from La Système de la nature
